Steve Jobs, and Experience

At the D Conference this year, Steve Jobs made an interesting statement - If you want to hire bright and creative people, you can’t over rule them ... You can do that once or twice a year.

At the same conference, he also made another interesting statement during his much-hyped discussion with Bill Gates. When asked what he wished he could learn from Bill, he said it was Bill's (Microsoft's) ability to partner with other companies.

2 useful thoughts for the day.

Steve Jobs is notorious famous for his quirky management style. Fortune magazine famously called him "one of Silicon Valley's leading egomaniacs". So when this guy speaks about other "bright" people and about "partnership", you listen; he speaks from long experience.

hey maga,
Wow .. someone who got so motivated by this interview that they decided to blog :)

I read up some 10 different news articles about this interview .. There are videos on youtube now.

I guess I should not ask a stupid question like whom do you like .. :)

But, do you think Steve's temper and his way of treating people is justified ?

if u ask the businessman in me, he would say "yes, as long as whatever he does increases shareholder value." :-) .. especially considering how Apple was floundering before Steve returned in the 90s.

but, i also think that Steve's personality (in reality, or marketing-wise) is now a part of Apple's DNA to such a large extent, that his exit can have a huge impact on Apple. and that tends to scare me a bit. it is not wise for any company to have a centralized hero, as he/she becomes an organizational weakness.

Well, I'd say that at least we have the luxury to say that that Apple should not depend too much on Jobs. Remember the Apple of 97 :) Jobs' larger than life image is hard to ignore I guess. But, I am very curious to see what Jobs does after Apple. Gates will be remembered for quite some time for this millions he's spending. But, Jobs and philanthropy/humility .. hmm

Its hard not to compare the two. Both seem to be from different schools, but cool in their own respects. I guess this gets summed up when Gates says "I envy Steve's tastes" or something to that effect ...
