IIM Admissions - High Activity Period

I moderate the IIM group on orkut; mostly helping avoid junk profiles.
Over the last few days, I saw a huge spurt of registrations. And a lot of them were genuine profiles. Which reminded me that the IIM admissions activity had finally kicked off. Knowing the gruelling schedule on campus, even aweek's day's delay is tough. Thank God for the judiciary .. ;-)
There were some other trends too.
A good number of people with an armed forces background are looking at IIMs. That is great news! IIMs are full of engineering grads (like yours truly!) with a very algorithmic view of life. Women, exchange students, commerce grads, CAs etc have been doing their bit to improve the diversity on campus. If this trend of people joining from the armed forces is really true, it adds some much-needed diversity to the campus population. Also, most of the campus junta is in dire need of some grooming assistance, which I feel these folks can readily help with. :-)
Going purely by the user location data on orkut, it looks like metros/cosmos still rule when it comes to CAT success. I hardly see people from say, Belgaum or Digboi, who have made it. Programmatic CAT preparation (aided by coaching institutes), coupled with a large local network of highly ambitious minds, still seems to be a key catalyst for success.
Smart people are everywhere. It is a pity if the IIM entry process favors large cities. I wonder what one can do to break this trend of "large-city success". Maybe some kind of digital setup that levels the playing field ..
The trend of hiring people without work-ex seems to continue. I have come to believe that a management degree without [at least a year of] prior work does not add much value. But who's to say? The market is booming, and everyone lands more than one job.
Congrats to all those who have made it. Your problems have just begun. >:-)

if you are in b'lore there are 20 of your friedns who are also writing CAT. in Belgaum you are alone and directionless and not motivated, and also TIME or CL don't hold mock CATs in Belgaum, so you have no way to assess yourself etc.

Given that BSNL 256kbps broadband costs only Rs.900/- per month, for unlimited download, the above portal setup can potentially improve accessibility of IIMs to other cities' population, at least at tier-2 and tier-3.

I have seen a lot of entrepurner without management degree. I believe that knowledge is essential but degree is not the only source of knowledge in this Internet age. The benefit of going to regular class is it exposes to a community of people which can he really helpful.

dhirubhai ambani was no MBA grad. he understood business intuitively. bill gates was a dropout. einstein was considered a failure in school. and from what i know, ramanujam had to go to UK to prove his genius.
exceptional minds will continue to carve their own paths.
an MBA just provides a regimented system to build a set of management competencies.

Just a couple of points:
1. I always ask ppl why they want to go for MBA. Most of them themselves dont know what the hell they are doing it for. Just doing MBA to get bigger pay check is a lame reason according to me. All the people you have mentioned had a clear purpose in their mind.
2. As for MBA program is concerned I think it can only beneficial to an individual only if can provide relevent knowledge and skill set to an individual. My point is in Information age there is no scarcity of information but there is a need of relevent information. That is if a person want to go from point A to point B, the education system must be flexible enough to take him from with minimum amount of time, energy and resource. It should not be one of those history class in which we forget everything without applying anything in our life. Most of the successful Entrepreneur without a formal degree have a few variable in their life which helps them to take some unique path.
